FAQs

Film, really? Why?

Oh yes, really film. I choose to work with 35mm film in varying speeds and styles in order to capture the style of photograph that makes my heart sing. Is it a little more challenging and a lot more expensive? Yes, it can be. I have the chops for digital photography but adore the color, aesthetic and pace of shooting with film. It means moving past the exterior of a staged photograph, to really working with and getting to know my subjects in order to find the character that makes the person. Kids & adults alike, I want my work to tell a story.

What’s the process like?

The number of film rolls per session are pre-set in the package you choose, or the one we create together. I will always bring an extra roll just in case.

Film then goes to a trusted lab for processing into high-resolution, flat TIFF files - this means I have the most information possible to work with the photo. FIles can be up to 95MB (soooo, very big!). From there, I ingest, weed out anything that doesn’t work and set the color grade. I may also use retouching techniques to rid the background of passersby or stray garbage cans (ok, New York, we see you). If there are noticeable blemishes or shirt stains, I will also remove these, but coming from a long line of beauty retouching - I try to ensure everyone looks like the best version of themselves.

To confirm any booking, a 50% deposit is required, which will hold the date we’ve agreed upon. A backup date is available for all bookings in case of weather or illness. Full cancellation of shoots by the client will incur a cancellation fee on a case-by-case basis.

Color grade? Doesn’t the film have color already baked in?

Well, yes and no. The film will pull from the lighting of the day/location, the type of film I use (some skew warmer or cooler, more grain or less), amount of light available and the speed of the lens. With a flat Tiff file, however, I’m able to create even more of the color I want to make the photos pop. I go a little past just applying curves and contrast, and work with the colors I envisioned during our planning sessions and leading up to the session.

Do I get to see the full gallery?

Yep, once complete, I’ll share a full gallery of the day for all packages.

Do I get to choose my own photos?

Definitely. I’m always here to help with selections, but overall it’s your day and I understand what you are looking for is unique to you. I do my utmost during the session and post-process to ensure I’m delivering as much pure gold as possible. I like to make it hard to choose ;)

What about printing? Do you offer prints or somewhere to print my photos?

Yes! Please, please, please make prints from our sessions. I shoot with printing in mind and love to see my work hanging in your homes! It’s such an honor to be a part of families in that way.

I offer printing through a professional lab as an add-on to your package. I also have partnered with Printique by Adorama who deliver wonderful quality prints and I have personally vetted as professional-quality printing.

Keep in mind; not all printers are created equal. Paper stock, type of printer, and even the type of ink used all go into how well the quality & color from what you see on the screen is translated to a physical product. I have vetted my labs to ensure my work is translated to how it should be.
